West Virginia approves 55.2MW Green Mountain wind project

West Virginia regulators have approved plans submitted by developer US WindForce to site a $131m, 55.2 megawatt wind farm near Keyser in the eastern Panhandle region, an official at the Public Service commission tells Recharge.

After a 300-day review period, commissioners issued their ruling late Monday that US Windforce and its joint venture partner, Edison Mission Group, can proceed with their 23-turbine Green Mountain project. A three-quarter mile, 138-kilovolt connection will also be built to a transmission line owned by Allegheny Power.

In its ruling, the commission says that Edison Mission will purchase the project after its completion including all rights and obligations. Construction will begin later this year. No start-up date has been released.

US Windforce, based in Greensburg, Pennsylvania, southeast of Pittsburgh, estimates Green Mountain will replace 296,000 barrels of oil a year.

Company officials say they are in talks with University of Maryland for a long-term power purchase agreement, although it is unclear if this would cover all output from the wind farm.

3. those are numbers provided by the builder
so they should be taken with a grain of salt.

how does wind power replace oil? we dont burn oil for electricity. They must mean the 55.2 MW is equivalent to the energy contained in 296,000 barrels.
