Intact pipes in coal plants don't make them safe.
Apparently, no matter what happens in a coal plant, it is never safe and continuously leaches poisonous gases, including sulfuric acid vapors, mercury vapors, nitrogen oxides, and carbon particulates into the atmosphere.

Pipes in the plant, called "smokestacks" deliberately launch aerosol http://www.ornl.gov/info/ornlreview/rev26-34/text/colmain.html">uranium into the air, brings zero screams from anti-nukes who sit and worry about their imagination of a pipe leak in a nuclear plant.

Uranium, which has been present on the earth for about 4.5 billion years is an element in the periodic table that Greenpeace wishes to ban.

Coal plants, of course, can kill at any level, whether the pipes are designed to leak or not and escape the attention of dumb guys with irrational fears of anything radioactive.

2. so replace them with nuclear.
start building now. we need increased capacity so we can run our cars electric during a transition away from fossil fuels to something else.

we don't even have enough electrical infrastructure right now to do that.

coast to coast national electrical infrastructure building program is what we need.
