3. Of course, that is area coverage. It says nothing about thickness. |
|
A slight increase in area coverage over last year means nothing if it is half as thick.

5. There is more multi-year ice then last year so there is a good |
|
chance it is thicker.
The 2009 minimum was 542,031 km (11.5%) more then the 2008 minimum and 995,313 km (23.4%) more then the 2007 minimum. It still sucks compared to the 2003 minimum but at least it is moving in the right direction.

How much damage to the arctic ice is being caused by all the research vessels crisscrossing the basin each summer? Instead of having a homogeneous ice pack, it's being fractured, making it easier to melt on the edges in the ship's wakes. Is there a comprehensive list of research vessels that ply the arctic waters each year?

4. We are about due for the max |
|
These are the last 8 years assuming that 2010 has peaked and the ice extent. As far as I know there is only about 8 years of daily sea ice available online.
03/21/03 14,844,063 03/10/04 14,360,313 03/06/05 14,098,906 03/11/06 13,782,344 03/10/07 13,945,625 03/09/08 14,516,875 03/05/09 14,412,813 03/08/10 14,375,000
8 Year Average 14,291,992
Now we see how much melts this summer.

6. We're definitely in the zone for the seasonal turn - so the Faster Than Expected Derby may begin |
