Google unveils bicycle mapping feature, gives you one more reason to bike today

Google just gave people one more reason to leave the car in the garage and go by bike. At today's National Biking Summit in Washington, D.C., the Internet giant unveiled the latest feature of its wildly popular Google Maps navigation site: Biking Directions.

"This has been the most requested addition to Google Maps," said Google spokeswoman Elaine Filadelfo.

Although Google lists bike lanes and bike routes in 150 U.S. cities, the Mountain View, Calif.,-based company said the mapping feature should prove especially helpful in Portland, where an estimated 8 percent of people commute daily by bicycle and the city wants residents to make http://www.oregonlive.com/portland/index.ssf/2010/02/portlands_2030_bicycle_plan_co.html">25 percent of all trips on a bicycle by 2030.

Like existing features offering directions for drivers, transit riders and walkers, the new feature gives step-by-step bicycling directions with estimated commuting times and distance. Users also can click a button within Google Maps to view bike trails, bike lanes, and bike-friendly roads in the community.
