California Allots Funds to Prepare for Massive Increase Soon in Solar PV

Published March 13, 2010

California's Public Utilities Commission is taking steps to prepare for a major increase in grid-tied solar electricity in the state about two years from now.

The commission has approved eight grants totaling up to $9.3 million for projects focused on technical aspects involved in adding "high penetration" solar to the grid.

The state's two largest utilities, Pacific Gas and Electric Co. and Southern California Edison, are each planning to incorporate at least 500 megawatts of solar PV into their energy mix in coming years. Hundreds of schools across the state are planning solar PV projects. Military bases also are adding solar at a fast pace, and more than 200 solar power plants have been proposed for the state's deserts.

The state's funding venture is called the California Solar Initiative Research, Development, Deployment and Demonstration Program. The $9.3 million is the first disbursement of $50 million the commission plans to expend through 2016 on "solar research and demonstration projects that will measurably reduce the cost and accelerate the installation of solar and other distributed technologies that could employ solar for generation, storage, or that could reduce the use of natural gas."

1. That's good news. I believe there should be a goal of solar panels on
every roof in California in the next ten years. My neighbor is remodeling his house and is looking into put solar panels on his roof as part of the remodel and another of our neighbors is in the business so I'm thinking we should pick his brain for what he knows.

2. And a fruit tree in every yard.
Why truck it in?

4. Whether you were being sarcastic or not, it's a good idea. Among our
neighbors here we have apples, oranges, lemons, plums and walnut trees within walking distance of each other. We have given permission to pick the fruit off of each others trees. I haven't had to buy a lemon in years.

8. Quite serious. So thanks. And good for you.
I was the lemon supplier in my old neighborhood.

3. Again? They've been fostering this delusionary claim for 30 years.
A few years ago they re-elected the usurper Governor Hydrogen Hummer on the grounds they were going to have a brazillion solar roofs.

I was in California a few months ago. I didn't see them.

According to California's own State energy website - and apparently denial includes not reading your own data - California now produces less solar energy than it did in 2002.

By contrast, every year California burns more and more and more and more and more dangerous natural gas and dumps the waste in the atmosphere.

Never underestimate the power of DENIAL, delusion and wishful thinking.

5. I never saw him promote solar. Actually the Dept. of Water and Power has
been giving subsidies to people to put solar on their roofs in the Los Angeles area for years now. I believe Gov. Moonbeam will do so for real if he gets another term.

6. Spare me, please. Governor Hydrogen Hummer was defined by our precious media
as a "green" Republican repeatedly for his vocal and loud support for the worthless "subsidize rich people" million solar roofs bill.

http://www.renewableenergyworld.com/rea/news/article/2005/10/gov-schwarzenegger-backs-new-million-solar-roofs-effort-38195

The plan to subsidize rich people who want to put toxic electronic waste on the roofs was one of his centerpiece bits of his "greenism."

Here's a link to Markos - the owner of the "solar will save us" um, "Democratic" website, drooling over Arnie the muscle bound not too bright "hydrogen car" hypester:

http://www.dailykos.com/storyonly/2007/5/21/12411/6904

Arnie has managed of course, to shut many of California's state parks, allow the schools to deteriorate further to avoid taxing the well subsidized rich people in that delusional state, but somehow he manages to keep his hydrogen station open so he can fuel his Hummer and the two or three other hydrogen cars in California.

Heckuva job.

7. Well, I know a lot of deluded Democrats voted for him because they
thought he was a liberal Republican because he had a lot of sex and smoked MJ at one time in his life. What he was, is an alien who came into this country illegally, cheated people to make money and then bragged about it years later on late night TV, and was able to get legal status through chicanery and lawyers. The media was very responsible in this and it's one of the reasons, I don't spend my money either watching mainstream media on TV, listening to it on the radio, or reading it in print. I get my information right here on the internet. If everyone did as I do, the whole corporate media would collapse for lack of advertising because the advertisers wouldn't waste their money where there is no viewership or readership to consume their products.

9. Those that deny the *reality* of the solar revolution deny all science
Anti-solar types are science illiterates - this has been true for the last 30 years.

yup
