European, Asian sturgeon numbers dwindling: Report

VANCOUVER — Eighty-five per cent of the sturgeon species in Europe and Asia are threatened with extinction, according to the International Union for Conservation of Nature, based in Switzerland.

Although the group doesn't include Canadian sturgeon on its Red List of Threatened Species, there is still reason to be concerned, said Sarah Sugiyama, executive director of the Fraser River Sturgeon Conservation Society.

"Sturgeon is listed as an endangered species by COSEWIC, the Committee on the Status of Endangered Wildlife in Canada, which is a federal government organization," Sugiyama said.

The latest update of the international group's Red List found that 18 species of sturgeon, valued for their roe, were all under threat of extinction.
