Sharp Announces that Operations Have Begun at Its New Thin Film Solar Cell Plant

By Sharp Solar Energy Solutions Group

Sharp, a world leader in solar cell and module production, is announcing today that it has started operations at its new thin-film solar cell plant in Sakai City, Osaka, Prefecture, Japan.

This plant will have 160MW production capacity during its initial phase; capacity will eventually reach a gigawatt of solar modules each year.

Thin-film solar cells have a structure in which thin layers of silicon are accumulated onto a glass substrate, enabling a dramatic reduction in the amount of silicon used.
