Bay Area company determined to make White House solar friendly
If the White House can persuade the nation to ditch junk food and plant a vegetable garden, it makes sense that solar power would be next on the agenda.

The Bay Area has one of the highest number of residential solar panels in the country -- but then we have an eco-responsible disposition and lots of sun, which doesn't apply everywhere else.

Still, an East Bay company is determined to see solar panels on the roof of the White House and has sent a letter to President Obama offering to install a solar power system for free. To encourage the White House and Department of the Interior to accept the offer "and demonstrate true environmental and fiscal leadership" Sungevity is also asking the public to show its support and sign an electronic "Globama petition".

The petition, which can be signed at the Solar on the White House website, will be shared with the President once it has received 10,000 signatures.

President Carter installed solar panels on the White House roof in 1979 (pictured) but President Reagan took them down in 1986.

1. Pretty cool.
I don't the govt should have this company do it for free though. Pay them an honest rate.

Even if it isn't enough to offset 100% of electrical use it would be a nice symbolic gesture.

2. One small step...
This would be a huge sign for solar, even if Obama lets them do it free, it's another step toward reducing this country's dependence on dirty energy and moving toward renewable! Imagine the impression it would give if the White House was a zero energy house (obviously down the road a little ways, but still!)
