Scientists paint grim picture of Barnegat Bay (NJ)

TOMS RIVER — Stakeholders in the Barnegat Bay’s future gathered Wednesday at Gov. Chris Christie’s request to discuss the most recent scientific findings of growing troubles for marine life.

The governor asked the Department of Environmental Protection to schedule three public meetings for feedback to inform his plans to help the ecologically stressed bay, which is home to a growing population as well as the Oyster Creek nuclear plant in Lacey Township.

Several attendees asked how the meetings might factor into final approval for the Oyster Creek cooling towers prescribed in January by the DEP and outgoing Gov. Jon S. Corzine.

The nuclear plant currently circulates bay water for its cooling system, which the state estimates kills more than 2 billion shrimp and tens of thousands of fish, crabs and clams annually.
