Who else here is an admirer of Stewart Udall? |
|
Seeing as he recently passed on, I'd like to know if anyone else here at the DU is a big fan of Stewart Udall? He was JFK and LBJ's Secretary of the Interior, and far and away one of the most renowned environmentalists in U.S. history, especially in modern times. As Interior Sec. he vastly expanded the number of national parks, in addition to hordes of other environment legislation (mostly as part of the Great Society initiative). In addition to authoring seminal books and articles about the earth and energy, he even represented radiation victims in court, which was ultimately addressed via legislation a few years later.
If you are a fan, did you by any chance meet him or know him? If so, I envy you. I found out about him last year and wanted so badly to at least write him, but I never found a way. Now it'll never happen. :(

Not sure how many on the site will recognize him though. Udall was also a conservationist. It seems like land preservation, Wilderness, ecology, are not seen as important these days. It seems like everyone pretty much equates "energy policy" with environmentalism. But environmentalists like Udall saw the enviromnent as a wholistic issue that included both conservation, low impact communities, and alternative energy.
Hopefully that is just a trend and we will renew a more holistic view in the future, if we get the immediate energy crisis resolved.

2. I was pretty disappointed when the campaign he ran did not succeed in |
|
obtaining the Democratic nomination for his brother, Morris Udall, for President in 1976.
Apparently Stewart and Morris Udall shared a big interest in environmental issues, which were the main reasons I supported Morris. Stewart's campaign must have been pretty good, because, I remember, it seemed that Morris actually had a chance against Jimmy Carter there for a while and, then, the convention just did its own thing and nominated Carter instead.

3. Mo's nomination snub has always intrigued me |
|
He made such a commendable effort that year, but Carter's "Washington outsider" approach was definitely the pitch-perfect appeal to a nation fresh off of Watergate. The Udall dynasty would definitely be a lot more recognized if he had been Prez. But oh well, they made this country better with whatever positions they attained, and continue to do so with Mark and Tom in the Senate.
