For dim bulbs only.
(Az Gov.) Brewer vetoes bill picking light-bulb fight

Arizona has already picked fights with the federal government over guns and health care, (to say nothing of illegal immigration) but Gov. Jan Brewer apparently isn't interested in a battle over light bulbs.

The bill was a response by the AZ wingnut legislature to a 2007 federal law that gradually increases energy standards for light bulbs

1. If these are the light-bulbs mandated in the UK, they are very bad for elderly eyes trying to read.

And cannot just be thrown away in the trash, based on their components.

incipient cataracts and I do just fine with my 13 watt bulbs. In AZ, at least, they CAN and ARE thrown in the trash.

5. I have one CFL in the ceiling of my studio that's just had its 15th birthday
I discovered them when I moved in here and needed to start throwing a lot of light around because I knew I was going blind. CFLs are a great way to do that without breaking the bank.

A transplant later, I'm still using them. I just dislike climbing on ladders to change bulbs as frequently as incandescent bulbs need changing and the lower electrical bills are nice, too.

8. And they keep the room cooler also! More important where I
live than where you do, but in the summer it's a big help.

15. The high desert gets plenty hot in the summer
although we're not as bad as Phoenix or Las Vegas.

in 1985 and I still have 2 working OSRAM EL001's. I would have had an other one but I broke it putting it back in a lamp. Those old one just barely made it into regular lamps w/o changing the harps. OSRAM had a local plant which the energy company got them from.

Don't you know there are magical mystical rays that CFLs
emit? These rays turn humans into pod people!

(Who does just fine with CFLs too. And non-compact FLs.
And CCFLs. And LED lamps. And tungsten-halogen lamps.
And ordinary incandescent lamps. HID bulbs. And candles.
And rushlights. And oil lamps. And Coleman lanterns. And
sunlight. What can I say; I'm flexible,)

9. Are any or those made in AZ? If you read the article I linked to,
the AZ nutislature wanted to exempt from the the new rules all light bulbs made in Arizona. A brief perusal of the Phoenix phone book does not reveal any light bulb manufacturers, but "rushlights", who knows?

10. Rushlights can be manufactured anywhere.
We grow rush in our miniature water garden, although we
don't normally turn our rushes into rushlights, although
that sounds like a fun activity for the grandkids. ;)

13. CFL should NEVER be thrown in trash.
Edited on Tue May-11-10 09:53 PM by Statistical
They contain mercury not a lot but multiple the amount times hundreds of millions of bulbs and it can be a large source of mercury leaching into groundwater. They should be taken to recycling center that can handle mercury waste.

Most Home Depot, Lowes, Ace Hardware accept CFL for recycling.

4. My eyes are needing more light as I age, so I'm building my own worklights using hi-tech LED arrays.
Ready made task lights are available but they're ridiculously expensive.

I've made my own lights, now working on newer stronger task lights using these:

Shown is a warm-white, 48 watt unit, 3400 lumens. The cool white is rated at 5000 lumens!

That's more light than a 300 watt incandescent, and these outlast fluorescent lamps.

Image below is approximate actual size:

These are very, very bright!

6. How big a heat sink do thse require?
We use a similar module for a 3D stage light system, but the heat sinks are pretty large...

12. I haven't mounted these yet, but think that a large CPU sink will do it.
I'm going to try a standard one without fan, then check the temps with a non-contact thermometer.

Smaller 1200 lumen units are working fine on just 1/2 a heat sink. This one lights my salt water aquarium:

Available at any Radio Shack, I got a few free from the local PC repair dudes.

Here's one I think would do for the big arrays, I'll try it without the fan, about 3 inches square:

14. How do you use those arrays?
I saw your picture below (the aquarium light) and was wondering
how easy it is to use them. (I've not handled one of the things
so have only seen photos of the one side.

How do you attach them to the heatsink?

Are there any gotcha's to be aware of?

Sensitivity to supply voltage or quality (smoothness)?

TIA. :hi:
