Solar Energy Saving Women’s Lives

This organization is doing some excellent work with solar energy in developing nations.

WE CARE Solar (Women’s Emergency Communication and Reliable Electricity) got its start developing portable solar electricity units for Nigeria to address the high maternal mortality rates in the country.

Their original seed funding came from the Blum Center for Developing Economies, UC Berkeley Big Ideas, and the Bixby Center for Population, Health and Sustainability.

The idea is that by providing reliable lighting, mobile communication, and blood bank refrigeration using solar electricity, some of the 1,100 maternal deaths for every 100,000 live births in Nigeria could be prevented. Globally, maternal deaths account for more than 500,000 deaths a year, 99% are in developing countries.
