GREENPEACE activists yesterday stormed Mirant Corp.'s headquarters in Manila bearing banners branding the American power company a toxic polluter and climate killer.

Rappelling down the facade of the Mirant building, the Greenpeace protesters, however, were apprehended for trespassing on the company's premises on Roxas Boulevard.

In a report, Greenpeace said results of tests on ash byproducts taken from Mirant's coal power plants in Toledo City in central Philippines found the presence of mercury, a known carcinogen.

"Mirant is gambling with people's lives with the planned expansion of its climate-killing toxic-producing coal plants," said Red Constantino, Greenpeace Southeast Asia Regional Energy campaigner. <snip>
