As Ocean Temps Rise, White-Beaked Dolphins Vanish From Scottish Waters

"White-beaked dolphins have almost disappeared from the west coast of Scotland in the past few years because the waters have become too warm.

The mammals are found only in the shallower waters of the northern North Atlantic and, until the late 1990s, the west coast of Scotland had some of the highest numbers of the cold water species in Europe.
However, by 2003 the species had been largely replaced by the common dolphin, which is found only in warmer waters. The change has been accompanied by an increase in water temperatures around the UK of up to 0.4C per decade since 1981.

A team of researchers from Aberdeen University, the Scottish Agricultural College in Inverness and the National Museums of Scotland in Edinburgh have been examining trends in strandings of whales and dolphins. They found that cold water species, such as the white-beaked dolphin, are stranding less frequently, while warm-water species are being recorded more frequently.

Scientists predict that waters around the UK will continue to warm and it is likely that white-beaked dolphins will continue to disappear from other areas where they were once common, including the east coast and southern North Sea."
