Mischievous monkeys injure dozens across Japan

A monkey in sheep's clothing.
-------

At least 43 people have been injured by monkeys on the loose in rural areas and in Tokyo

Two years after a monkey caused a standstill in central Tokyo while evading capture in downtown Shibuya, monkeys are causing more mayhem across Japan. August seems to be the month they get most fiesty. This year 43 people have been reported injured across Shizuoka prefecture due to monkey mischief.

Two weeks ago a wild monkey was caught with tranquilizer darts in downtown Tokyo, around the Ikebukuro area of the city. Hundreds of people came to see the three-story house where it had been hiding. On that occasion the captured critter was released back into the mountains. But in Mishima and Susono cities near the Japan Alps in Hakone this week, residents have been attacked, bitten and scratched by what seems to be a team of macaques. On one day alone, August 25, some 15 people in Susono were injured.

The Mainichi newspaper reports that so far, no progress has been made to halt the rampage. "Police, fire fighters and local hunters have been searching for the monkeys but so far none have been captured," says the newspaper.

One 73-year-old woman reported that a monkey grabbed her leg from behind. She was later given a tetanus shot.

1. Go get 'em, monkeys!
A 73-year-old woman was later given a tetanus shot? Oh, the humanity! I'm glad we only have pit bulls here in the States.

2. I wouldn't touch those monkies.
They don't seem very friendly.
