Two men charged in cooking oil theft outside North Bergen eatery

NORTH BERGEN – They were just a bunch of greasy criminals.

Township police arrested two men Monday morning in the process of sucking 700 gallons of used cooking oil from two storage tanks behind a Five Guys Burgers and Fries restaurant.

“These weren’t sneaky thieves, they were greasy thieves,” Detective Lt. Frank Cannella said.

Police busted Queens, N.Y. residents Youngil Kim, 48, and Byung Ho Choi, 55, outside the restaurant, at 2100 88th St. at about 8:50 a.m., Cannella said.

Cannella said the men used a canary yellow van outfitted with a hose that was attached to a generator. The oil was stored in a plastic bladder in the truck, which was confiscated by police, Cannella said.

Waste oil can be turned into biodiesel fuel, and Five Guys sells its grease to a contractor for a little more than $1 a gallon, Cannella said.

1. I'd pay $1 a gallon for the oil
then filter it and run it straight in my truck. I wonder if the recently opened 5 guys place in town will sell me their oil.

I've heard their food sucks.

4. What kind of vegetable oil modification would you use in your truck?
This got me more inclined toward biodiesel, if that's what I decided to do:

Currently I just drive a small 25 year old truck with a gasoline engine and I've no plans to change. Maybe I can get 25 more years from it.

5. None
I have an F350 with the 7.3L powerstroke. It runs straight veggy oil just fine.

Now without adding a system for heating the oil before injection I would only run a 50/50 blend of diesel, but if I could get enough of a supply of used veggy oil I would put in a vegistroke setup and start/stop on diesel and run primarily on WVO.

Vegetable oil based diesel(whether straight or refined as bio-diesel) is by far the most practical alternative fuel available. This country could be energy self sufficient if we embraced bio-diesel as a the realistic solution that it is, and it could be accomplished faster than any other solution.
