Omaha-based Tenaska Inc. has signed a 15-year agreement to buy ethanol made from cellulose by a California company.
Tenaska BioFuels LLC would buy the fuel from BlueFire Renewables Inc. of Irvine, Calif., which plans production plants in Fulton, Miss., and Lancaster, Calif.
The agreement would provide revenue once the plants open and help BlueFire qualify for debt financing through the U.S. Energy and Agriculture Departments, said BlueFire CEO Arnold Klann. He said the contract is one of the first of its kind.
Compared with ethanol made from corn, ethanol from cellulose such as cornstalks, wood waste, straw and switchgrass is more expensive to produce. It receives extra government subsidies to encourage production.
