1. They have a lot of their own oil |
|
LOTS of it. It's fairly easy for them to be energy independent.

2. What on earth are you talking about??? |

Is Venezuela energy-independent? In what sense? Officially, Venezuela is a member of OPEC (The Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries) and has been since its founding, IIRC. That means that Venezuela EXPORTS oil each and every year, which in turn means that the amount of oil they extract from the ground each year is in excess of the amount that they use.
That would seem to me the definition of self sufficiency. No news here.
I realize that our economy is hundreds of times larger than theirs but surely we can learn from them.
How? Seriously, how could we learn from them? While Chavez has been trying to distribute oil revenues more equally throughout society, the truth is that Venezuela doesn't really have much of an economy at all without oil. Given this fact, how can the US learn from the Venezuelan economy?

4. 'Scuse me! I'm looking for information here, not more questions. |

If I am incorrect just say so for goodness sake.
I was under the impression that there were other steps taken besides digging more holes. If I'm wrong, I can accept that. If I knew the answer I wouldn't have asked the question.
