Energy boss Chu praises Google's offshore project

Google's plan to build an undersea power line for offshore wind farms along the East Coast drew praise Friday from U.S. Energy Secretary Steven Chu during a visit to the company's Mountain View headquarters.

In a question-and-answer session with Google employees, Chu said the proposed Atlantic Wind Connection transmission line could help provide more renewable power to the coast's teeming cities. Google has agreed to provide 37.5 percent of the initial funding for the 350-mile line, which would stretch from New Jersey to Virginia.

"The Atlantic undersea cable could have a tremendous impact," Chu told the employees before meeting with Google executives to discuss the company's energy initiatives. "It's a very, very good project."
