Chernobyl to become newest tourist trap
KIEV, Ukraine – Want a better understanding of the world's worst nuclear disaster? Come tour the Chernobyl nuclear power plant.

Beginning next year, Ukraine plans to open up the sealed zone around the Chernobyl reactor to visitors who wish to learn more about the tragedy that occurred nearly a quarter of a century ago, the Emergency Situations Ministry said Monday.

1. My stepmother toured Hiroshima with other Red Cross workers after the war.
I know because she took pictures and put them in an album with tidy labels I found after her death.

When she returned home from Japan, she was diagnosed with thyroid cancer. Then stomach cancer. And, eventually, at seventy-two, with breast cancer which killed her. She put up a good fight.

I've often wondered if anyone ever gathered the cancer statistics on Americans who served in occupied Japan.

Maybe people should rethink touring Chernobyl.
