TedTalk-Naomi Klein: Addicted to risk
Naomi delivered a TED talk at the first-ever http://conferences.ted.com/TEDWomen/"> first-ever TEDWomen conference on December 8, 2010, in Washington, DC. Just days before the talk, Naomi had been on a boat in the Gulf of Mexico, looking at the catastrophic results of BP's risky pursuit of oil. Our societies have become addicted to extreme risk in finding new energy, new financial instruments and more—and too often, we're left to clean up a mess afterward.

2. Perhaps because our societies have done so much to isolate
those that take the risks from the consequences of their risky actions.

Sadly, nowadays, there is little or no downside for those taking horrific risks. Those at the "helm", making the decisions, are rarely the ones who will lose anything. They risk the lives, welfare and money of others. They set it up so they can gain if things go well...and lose nothing if things go badly. It appears to be equally true in corporate bastions and government offices.
