please help save some wildnerness
STOP the DESTRUCTION of La Tuna Canyon!

The Los Angeles Department of Public Works would like to place a huge sediment disposal site (dump) in La Tuna Canyon in several pristine canyons, as was recently done in Arcadia, where more than 200 native oaks were chopped down on thirteen acres to make a sediment dump in the Woodlands. Vulcan Materials has volunteered empty quarry sites for dump sites instead of using La Tuna Canyon for a dump, but the Department of Public Works is proceeding with the La Tuna Canyon plan and has not contacted Vulcan Materials. California Dept of Fish and Game and the State Water Resources Board thought this La Tuna Canyon dump site idea had been taken "off the table" and are against the La Tuna Canyon dump proposal, but the DPW is nevertheless proceeding with it.

Alternatives to this destruction must be vigorously pursued! Non-destructive alternatives exist! Please help save this last vestige of wild, natural landscape so near to the heart of Los Angeles by being ready to voice your opinion and take action on its behalf!

For more information about this project, contact Mr. Youssef Chebabi, project manager for the DPW, at 626 458-6154 or ychebabi@dpw.lacounty.gov. Please refer to the La Tuna Canyon Sediment Placement Project. Thank you! Let him know your concerns!

At the following link is the Google Map of the La Tuna Canyon sediment placement site as compiled by Jerry Baker from parcels owned by L. A. County Flood Control in the area specified by the County for the "new" sediment dump: http://www.gpsvisualizer.com/display/1299092511-03693-173.55.105.2.html

Much about this proposed project remains vague at this point. There is also concern that the County SPS would eventually enable a subdivision to be built out on the compacted sediment site after it is full and decommissioned.

Please don't let La Tuna Canyon become a sediment dump! Please help preserve this uncommon stretch of natural beauty in our midst! Thank you!

please send an email to the DWP's Mr. Chebabi at ychebabi@dpw.lacounty.gov

Dear Mr. Youssef Chebabi:

We vehemently oppose the Los Angeles DWP’s La Tuna Canyon Sediment Placement Project, which would dump sediment waste in several pristine woodland canyons.

Los Angeles has so little open space and wilderness left that destroying the remaining wilderness is a travesty.

There are alternative places to dump the sediment.

Please add my name to the list of citizens opposed to
the La Tuna Canyon Sediment Placement Project.

Sincerely,

(this is cross-posted on GD)

3. I'd have to know a lot more than that to tell if that's the best alternative
What other sites were identified for the dump?

5. Where there other sites under consideration for this dump
Why was this particular site chosen. Maybe it is the best choice, even if it is the lesser of evils.

Why do the proponents of the dump think it's needed. Why did they choose to put it there exactly?

6. huh!? did you read the blurb?
an industrial site is being offered as an alternative; it's preferable to dumping the sediment in a wildnerness area and destroying same;

proponents of the dump are the same individuals who oversaw the destruction of 200 ancient Live Oak trees on acreage that will now be used as a sediment dump, when there were other alternative sites
