NHK showing people how to keep warm with newspaper and plastic wrap.
Wrap yourself with sections of newspaper and then secure it with plastic food wrap.

Just an interesting tidbit for the survivalists and end-timers out there.

1. Oh dear lord
I used to think the Japanese were the best prepared government on Earth. I'll grant that the scale of this disaster is huge, but newspaper and plastic wrap? FAIL!

2. Actually, that's how I got through my first winter
in Middle America. (Southern Californian in a strange place to her.) The newspaper works. I don't think we had plastic wrap back then in the late fifties. Anyway, I never used it. Probably, if people went scavenging in the ruined buildings survivors could find stuff to survive on but I'll reserve judgement as to why they aren't doing it.

3. After a tsunami?
Not much left to scavenge in most places.

Weather in the Miyagi area can be like Maine.

8. That was the purpose I mentioned to go scavenging
in the ruins to find those things. Like I said I'm not going to second guess why they aren't doing it. Safety? The culture?

9. It's very hard to dry out stuff that's been in sea water
especially when it's snowing.

5. Plastic works!
Used it once while skiing and it kept me warm. Too long to explain in detail...but it did kept me warm as it keeps all the heat in. Trouble is you eventually perspire...so adding newspaper should help.

11. A good reminder that it's probably cold over there.
Not something that hit my radar screen.

Unfortunately... if you're near enough to a working radio/tv there's a good chance that you aren't the one that needs to hear the message.

12. Anyone who has been homeless for even a short amount of time...
knows that newspapers are your friend to keeping warm.

I learned the trick from my dad who used to line his shoes and jacket during the depression to keep warm.

It served me well during a certain time in my life.
