This year's advisory sets some stricter limits for safe fish consumption from several of the state's streams and rivers, including Duck Creek, the Little Muskingum River and the Ohio River in the Washington County area.
One meal per month is advised for common carp and sauger caught in Duck Creek between Township Road 329 in Stanleyville and Ohio 26 in Norwood, due to the presence of DDT in the waters. From Ohio 26 in Norwood to the Ohio River, one meal per month is advised due to potential mercury in black crappie, freshwater drum, and saugeye more than 16 inches in length.
In the Little Muskingum River an advisory of one meal per month has been issued from Hill's Covered Bridge near Ohio 26 to the Ohio River for freshwater drum due to mercury and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) In the Little Muskingum, a meal per month is advised for spotted bass due to mercury.
On the Ohio River, from the Pennsylvania border to the Belleville Lock south of Parkersburg, OEPA advises residents not to eat channel catfish 18 inches and longer due to PCBs. Due to the presence of PCBs, one meal every two months may be eaten of channel catfish less than 18 inches in length as well as common carp and white bass. On the Ohio River, one meal per month can be eaten of black crappie, flathead catfish, freshwater drum 14 inches and longer, largemouth bass, sauger, saugeye, smallmouth bass, spotted bass, hybrid striped bass, all suckers, walleye and white crappie.
