1. Is that really a serious question? In this country where many people believe in creation? |
|
And think "learnin'" is something only "fancy" people want to do? Where repukes, who destroyed the economy in 2008, were voted back into power in 2010 by mouth-breathers of America? In this country where attacking teachers and schools is the thing to do, while banksters get off with huge bonuses?
????????

6. If you read the article I cite, it mentioned that the US has the second highest science knowledge |
|
Edited on Sun Mar-20-11 02:32 PM by happyslug
The US is Second to Sweden when it comes to general Science knowledge. Education is much lower, but more Americans know more science then anyone but the Swiss. "On the one hand, scientific literacy has been rising, going from 10 percent in 1988 to 28 percent in 2008, which makes America second only to Sweden."Read more: http://www.post-gazette.com/pg/11079/1133328-84.stm#ixzz1HAaoPoev

9. And the US is Second to Sweden in General Science Knowledge |
|
Mentioned in the Article cited. Thus the country with the second highest general knowledge as to Science supports Dominionists. What about the rest of the world with Voters that have a lower general knowledge of science then the US? i.e every country but Sweden?

7. Actually, you're the original poster. If you want, you can |
|
put some of the article in your original post, so people can see whether they want to go read it or not. Just a blind link with no information other than some general comment is not likely to pique people's interest enough to go and read an article, just to see if it's really worth reading or not.
Even when you post part of the article, many people still won't click the link. DUers are busy, and don't always read things unless the OP tells them a reason why they should. There are tons of articles out there. What makes this one worthy of our time? Tell us that, and we might read it. Tell us nothing, and we'll just click the back button and move on.

5. It really does surprise me . . . |
|
Admittedly, I'm in an odd position. My mother is a chemist and my father is an electrical engineer, so I've had a lot of exposure to various ideas and concepts even during casual conversations.
But just this week, I've explained to two (apparently) well-educated professional adults the basics of atomic energy, how a reactor works and the implications of what is going on in Japan. And it wasn't like I was going into super-detail (most of my knowledge was from a tour of a plant I took when I was a cub scout).
Are folks really that ignorant of stuff around them?

11. Several reasons: kids whose parents are scientists |
|
Edited on Sun Mar-20-11 02:44 PM by truedelphi
Watched for years as parent(s) were laid off when the manufacturing, and the research and the other science-related jobs went to India and China.
Why get two degrees in the sciences, spending 10 years at university, only to be left on unemployment?
Kids are not stupid.
Other thing, the American public school system allows in vast numbers of children who are only here part time. For decades, more money has been thrown into the mix in California to help the Latino population catch up to American born kids.
If this was happening in Europe, they would adjust the numbers. (BTW, I don't mean this as a "dig" against Latino kids. But when a family lives in the USA for three years, then moves back to Mexico, then moves back here four years later, it is no wonder that the testing scores are not as high as would be expected. Adjustments should be made in the test scoring. But they aren't.)

But that's from what I've seen on the internet.

14. General knowledge will not get us to specific knowledge. I have |
|
a great deal of general knowledge and can play trivial pursuit with the best of them. But as the saying goes a little knowledge is a dangerous thing. I have specific knowledge only in social work. And that is years ago. What I want to know is how many of those with general knowledge are going to move on into more specific disciplines?
