Capps Calls for Halt to Diablo License Renewal
Local Congresswoman Lois Capps (D) is calling on the Nuclear Regulatory Commission to suspend the license renewal process at Diablo Canyon Nuclear Power Plant in San Luis Obispo County.

In a letter sent to the NRC Thursday, Capps says she wants the agency to "immediately stay the license renewal process for the Diablo Canyon Nuclear Power Plant until further studies demonstrate the plant's design and operations can withstand an earthquake and other potential threats."

Critics have called on PG&E, the operator of Diablo Canyon, to perform better seismic studies around the plant. Recent seismic maps show there are two fault lines near the plant. But, PG&E says Diablo was built to withstand a magnitude 7.5 earthquake and that the nearby faults aren't capable of generating that large of a temblor.

2. I hope it works. History shows that it probably won't, though.
Diablo Canyon should never have been built. But it was. It should never have been allowed to operate. But it was. It should not have its license renewed. It probably will.

Very sad.

3. Earthquake science is just not that reliable. A prediction that there will NOT be
a quake of a magnitude larger than 7.5 is a good basis for establishing building codes and the like. But it just is not good enough at this point for determining whether to license a nuclear plant at a site.

What was the prediction with regard to the Fukushima site in Japan? I bet they did not predict that an earthquake at level 8.9 or thereabouts was a possibility.

Nuclear reactors should not be licensed based on probabilities and predictions based on maybes and could-be's. They should simply not be licensed at all but if they must be then only in the areas in which there will be no accidents (if there are any such areas).

Nuclear energy is just too horribly dangerous. We need to start closing plants. Let's begin with San Onofre and Diablo.

5. Given that Diablo Canyon is 25% of northern Californias...
Nuclear energy is just too horribly dangerous. We need to start closing plants.
=================

Given that Diablo Canyon is 25% of northern California's generating capacity, and
northern California needs the energy to keep its business booming in Silicon Valley,
there's no way that Diablo Canyon would be closed.

There's no way that the NRC is going to delay the relicensing for the same reason.

The NRC was set up as an independent agency and doesn't take orders from Capps.
