China is expected to announce a lower target for nuclear power expansion and should reduce its planned capacity for 2020 by at least 10 gigawatts, state media on Tuesday quoted an industry official as saying.

The government is also expected to slow down development of inland nuclear power plants, the official China Daily quoted Wei Zhaofeng, deputy head of the China Electricity Council, as saying.

Wei said China should reduce its 2020 target of 90 gigawatts of nuclear capacity by at least 10 gigawatts.

'The industry is likely to miss our earlier prediction of achieving 40 gigawatts of nuclear capacity by 2015,' he was quoted as saying.
