US Steelmaking Only a Small Part of Global Steel CO2 Emissions

The major takeaways from a new report issued by the US Department of Energy (DOE) are that 1) the US steel industry can boast some of the lowest CO2 emissions in the world, but that 2) new technologies will still be needed to bring the CO2 emissions even lower to come in line with government mandates. But the whole story of the DOE report is only helpful if we use the US CO2 figures to look at the broader global context.

1. Through in the CO2 expended by employees
going into the plant. We are thinking green at my company, and I proposed that the company subsidize busline to the plant as a part of CO2 savings which we could credit. I did it before we built our latest parking extension (the third since I started). It did not go anyplace. Also telecommuting 1 day/week also was shot down.

I did do an interesting calculation. It is 8 miles round trip to my work, and I sometimes walk it in the summertime (hope to do more this summer to extend the warranty on one of my vehicles). It costs me about $6-$8 at most to operate my vehicle. To replace the 800 calories from walking at work would cost me about the same (a partial breakfast and lunch). Just thought it was interesting how you can operate a car for the same expense as your own body (at least at prepared food rates). I guess I will carry my packed lunch to work as well.
