Toyota Sells 1-Millionth Prius In US - Hit 2 Million Globally In October, 3 Million Last Month

The little first-generation Prius from 11 years ago didn't exactly come across as the car that would shake the world. It was a subcompact, econobox-looking car hatched into a world of cheap gasoline. But the next generation of Priuses was significantly improved. And gas prices would go through the roof by 2008, making Prius a household name and leaving the rest of the auto industry wondering why they hadn't persued the idea.

The announcement is just the latest for the 50-mile-per-gallon Prius, now a midsize. Worldwide Prius sales exceeded 2 million in October, and 3 million last month.

"Since the Prius went on sale 11 years ago, not a year has gone by when it hasn't been the number one selling hybrid vehicle in the U.S," said Bob Carter, Toyota Division group vice president and general manager. "Since its introduction, 13 other auto brands have seen the benefits of hybrid technology and joined the hybrid market."

More than 97 percent of all Toyota Priuses -- Toyota now calls them Prii for plural after a promotion that included a spot here on Drive On -- sold since 2000 are still on the road. Since it was introduced in the U.S. in 2000, Prius, when compared to the average car, has saved American consumers more than an estimated 881 million gallons of gas, $2.19 billion in fuel costs, and 12.4 million tons of CO2 emissions.

...that the tax subsidies for zero-emissions vehicles go away after 60,000 units - 2000,000 for plug-ins -- of a model are sold.

So people are buying Priora -- sorry, Toyota, prius is neuter singular, and has a nominative plural priora, no contest can change that -- on the merits, more or less.

Every major product (such as cars)should have a comprehensive environmental impact index that includes the total impact on the environment. Factors considered might be average fuel consumption, the environmental impact from manufacture of all components including batteries, tires, paint, etc to the impact of overall transportation of components to final assembly to final destination, cost of employee commutes, etc Too many incentives and regulations are done without considering the overall true cost of the big picture. Sometimes we're plugging holes in the dike based on politics instead of looking at overall impact. Ethanol is one example.

I loves me some Prius.... we put a receiver hitch for the bike rack on the back end. We've moved a small freezer in our old one... just fold the seats down. It's a town car, it's a pickup... and it gets 52 mpg.

If any of y'all would do me a HUGH favor, my zip is 20024. I know we have a Tacoma (short-bed, no doubt), Civic and Prius.

While there is now a pickup available, I don't know if it's the best choice for hauling 8' pieces of anything.

The pantry job has been ready and waiting for nearly five years now and, at this point, I'm looking kind of pathetic (in my own eyes).

9. Yep, I just purchased a new 2010 Prius

They gave me about $700.00 over the blue book for my 1994 Camry, which was still in surprisingly good shape. If I keep the Prius for as long as I kept the Camry it will more than pay for itself in fuel savings. I also just hauled a 6ft bookcase from Ikea in it with the hatchback closed. Never could have done that with my Camry.
