Local farmers are on the lookout for the latest invasive species that could spell trouble for summer crops.
The Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development earlier this year confirmed that the brown marmorated stink bug - an unwelcome visitor from Asia that likely stowed away aboard a shipping vessel to enjoy America's fruit crops - has been found in four counties, including Ingham and Eaton. Officials say it's too early to tell how prevalent the pests are in both counties, but research shows they spread quickly.
Though it poses no real public health risks - other than a nasty stink if squashed or spooked - the real threat is to the state's $71.3 billion agricultural industry.
