TEPCO Press Release—…Facilities…after Tohoku-Taiheiyou-Oki Earthquake…(as of 9:00AM, April 18th)

Press Release (Apr 18,2011)
Status of TEPCO's Facilities and its services after the Tohoku-Chihou-Taiheiyou-Oki Earthquake (as of 9:00AM, April 18th)

Due to the Tohoku-Chihou-Taiheiyou-Oki Earthquake which occurred on March
11th 2011, TEPCO's facilities including our nuclear power stations have
been severely damaged. We deeply apologize for the anxiety and
inconvenience caused.

Below is the status of TEPCO's major facilities.
*New items have been underlined

«Nuclear Power Station»
Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station:
Units 1 to 3: shutdown due to the earthquake
(Units 4 to 6: outage due to regular inspections)

* From 5:39 pm to 9:22 pm, April 17th, the spent fuel pool of Unit 4 was
sprayed with water using the concrete pumping vehicle.

* On March 20th, 21st, 23rd to April 16th, we detected radioactive
materials in the air collected at the site of Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear
Power Station. The data of detected three nuclides (Iodine-131, Cesium-
134 and Cesium-137) was reported as fixed data. Other nuclides figures
are to be re-evaluated based on the improved measures for recurrence
prevention which have been prepared in accordance to a strong warning by
NISA on April 1st.

* On March 21st, 23rd to April 16th, we detected radioactive materials from
seawater around the discharge canal. The data of detected three nuclides
(Iodine-131, Cesium-134 and Cesium-137) was reported as fixed data. Other
nuclides figures are to be re-evaluated based on the improved measures
for recurrence prevention which have been prepared in accordance to a
strong warning by NISA on April 1st.

* We conducted nuclide analysis on subsurface water (sub drain) near the
turbine buildings and detected Iodine-131, Cesium-134 and Cesium-137 on
April 6th and 13th. As a radioactive dose of the sample collected on
April 13th increased compared to that of April 6th, we received an oral
instruction from Nuclear and Industrial Safety Agency to strengthen the
monitoring. In response, we increased the frequency of the sampling of
the subsurface water (sub drain) of Units 1 to 6 and deep well located
in the station from once a week to three times a week. We detected
Iodine-131, Cesium-134 and Cesium-137 during the sampling survey on
April 16th.

* At 2:34 pm, April 17th, the occurrence of a short circuit caused by the
lack of repair of the end of the unused cable which is connected parallel
to the power of spent fuel common pool caused the circuit breaker of the
power side to open resulting in suspended power supply to the spent fuel
common pool. However, at 5:30 pm, April 17th, the power of the spent fuel
common pool was restored after the removal and inspection of the cable.

* From 11:30 am to 2:00 pm, April 17th, we confirmed plant conditions
(radiation dose, temperature, measurement of oxygen density, etc) using
the remote-controlled robot. In addition, we confirmed the plant
conditions inside of Unit 1's reactor building from 4:00 pm to 5:30 pm,
April 17th.

Fukushima Daini Nuclear Power Station:
Units 1 to 4: shutdown due to the earthquake

Kashiwazaki Kariwa Nuclear Power Station:
Units 1, 5, 6, 7: normal operation
(Units 2 to 4: outage due to regular inspection)

«Thermal Power Station»
- Hirono Thermal Power Station Units 2 and 4: Shutdown due to the earthquake
- Hitachinaka Thermal Power Station Unit 1: Shutdown due to the earthquake
- Kashima Thermal Power Station Unit 6: Shutdown due to the earthquake

«Hydro Power Station»
- Power supply has returned to normal and facilities damaged by the
earthquake are now being handled in a timely manner.

«Impacts on Transmission Facilities»
- Power supply has returned to normal and facilities damaged by the
earthquake are now being handled in a timely manner.

«Avoidance of further Implementation on Planned Rolling Blackouts and
Request for Conserving Electricity Consumption»
Currently, we are working to restore electricity supply after our nuclear
and thermal power facilities were severely damaged by Tohoku-Chihou-
Taiheiyou-Oki Earthquake. The widespread understanding and cooperation of
our customers to conserve electricity have contributed to the improvement
of this tight power supply-demand balance situation.
Amidst this backdrop, since the electricity supply will be able to balance
with the demand for the time being, we have decided not to implement
further rolling blackouts in principle.
However, we must sincerely ask for your continued cooperation in reducing
electricity consumption due to the possible increase in demand caused by
warmer weather or unexpected trouble at power stations that are currently
being restored to service. In case the electricity supply-demand balance
becomes tighter than expected, as stated, we may reluctantly restart the
implementation of rolling blackouts. We kindly ask for your cooperation.
We will do our best to maintain this policy of avoiding further
implementation of rolling blackouts during the summer.
