Carbon emissions 'hidden' in imported goods revealed (BBC)

The extent of carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions "hidden" in imported goods is growing, according to two studies.

Official statistics do not include emissions created by making imported goods but researchers say they should.

It comes as the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences reports 26% of global emissions come from producing goods for trade.

The Carbon Trust found such "embedded" CO2 could negate domestic carbon cuts planned in the UK up to 2025.

Glen Peters of research group Cicero, lead authors of the PNAS report, told BBC News: "There is a degree of delusion about emissions cuts in developed nations. They are not really cuts at all if countries are simply buying in products they used to manufacture.

1. Shiitake mushrooms from China.

I shouldn't have been, but I was shocked when after buying these mushrooms, a few months later someone put a label on the bin that stated they were from China. And I live in a community where they are grown by many farmers.

So I was sitting here thinking again about the massive carbon footprint of shipping things across the skies for us to consume.

And it donned on me. The only way we are going to save the planet is to unionize China. As long as it's cheaper to ship them, we will.

2. I found the same thing with some garlic cloves the wife bought

"made in China". Garlic grows so good here it could be classified as a weed, and it's cheaper to ship it 1,000s of miles from China???

3. I saw the garlic from China also. Outrageous.

I'm willing to spend more money for local. But if one doesn't have the money, then... We're in deep trouble. Not money, but carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. I wish people were paying attention.
