Vermont Electric Cooperative board nixes deal with Vermont Yankee
Vermont Electric Cooperative board nixes deal with Vermont Yankee
4:55 PM, Apr. 26, 2011
Terri Hallenbeck, Free Press Staff Writer

JOHNSON — Eleven board members sat a table and heard each side make its case Tuesday afternoon. Then, like a jury, the Vermont Electric Cooperative Inc. board voted.

The verdict: No contract with Vermont Yankee.

<snip>

The board opted for the strongest message against Vermont Yankee among several choices it considered Tuesday. The board could have decided not to vote at all on the deal, or to accept it pending either the state’s or the court’s permission for the plant to keep operating after next year. Co-op Chief Executive David Hallquist said the board essentially was telling the staff to cease negotiating with Vermont Yankee owner Entergy Corp. on a new power agreement....

NRC Won’t Intervene In Yankee Lawsuit

(Host) The Nuclear Regulatory Commission says it won't intervene in the lawsuit against the state over the continued operation of the Vermont Yankee plant.

Yankee owner Entergy wants a court to rule that only the federal government has the right to control Yankee's future operation.

But the NRC says Vermont has a regulatory role as well.

4. I can already hear it now. Those damned liberals shut down our nuclear plants.
I suppose we should begin practicing our counterarguments.

Yay Vermont!

6. More dirty coal and less fukushima daiichi's
We don't have to replace Vermont Yankee with coal, we've got alternates and that is what will be used. Lots of wind power thats pretty much there round the clock off the coast of Vermont just begging to be harnessed.
The argument of it's either nuclear or coal is old and outdated when in actuality it's neither. Just so's you know. :hi:

7. Top man on Grid Reliability says NO MORE COAL OR NUCLEAR NEEDED - EVER.
It's at the end of the second half of the interview:

As can be seen by the way they are both excluded, nuclear and coal are really not competitors except for those who own mineral rights to the relative fuels. To the rest of the people making money in the present centralized system of power generation, coal and nuclear are just two sides of the same coin.

10. radioactive coal ash, acid rain, global warming, toxic tuna, arsenic, lead, cadmium, mercury...
The hundreds of millions of tons of radioactive coal ash per year in the US are not exactly disposed of properly. Coal ash is second only to household garbage in volume of waste produced per year.

People living near some coal ash sites have a staggering 1 in 50 risk of cancer.
