Tornado Strains Jefferson County as Officials Weigh Bankruptcy

Jefferson County, Alabama, already on the brink of bankruptcy, faces another emergency after a tornado ripped through the state’s most populous county, killing at least 14 people, injuring more than 100 and destroying homes.

The county of 660,000 people, which is forecasting it will run out of cash by the end July, was devastated yesterday when a tornado with winds of more than 100 mph (161 kph) tore through the west side and then slammed into Birmingham’s northern neighborhoods.
