Chicken fat fueling Coosa students’ ride
Twenty-two school buses in that district are being used in an experiment by the Floyd County school system’s transportation department.

“What we’re doing is experimenting with biodiesel,” said Transportation Director Terry Simpson. “We’re using a 5 percent blend of chicken fat to run the buses.”

The experiment started in late May, and the fuel is manufactured locally by Rome-based U.S. Biofuels Inc.

“We need at least a good six months’ worth of data before we can determine anything,” he said. “But it’s manufactured locally, is better for the environment, and it’s a renewable energy source. If it works out, we’ll be way ahead of the ballgame.”
