Company Press Release:

Tenesol's PV energy storage system goes on sale
12. September 2011 | By: Tenesol

Tenesol has launched its PV energy conversion and storage solution. The Sun Smart+ system is the result of a four year project and is available to buy in certain international markets.

...In 2008, Tenesol, together with several leading associations from France and Germany, set out to create a new technology in energy storage for grid connected PV systems. The solution provides energy conversion and system management. Its functions include multidirectional energy flows, self-consumption, grid support and back-up.

Following one of the largest field tests ever undertaken in Europe, the €9 million project has now delivered a working system that can be mass produced.

The solution can be retrofitted to residential and small commercial systems. It can accommodate PV energy production of up to 5 kWp for more than 20 years. The system uses lithium-ion batteries rated from eight to 13 kWh with a nominal voltage of 190 V to 290 V. The batteries are compact and highly energy efficient, and in a recent two year field test reached an impressive 97 percent efficiency.

I was taken with the stats on the lithium ion batteries: 20 year life and 97% efficiency.

2. This is good news.
As soon as I can buy the latest generation lithium ion car batteries at a junkyard Salvage price,
or,
our Rural Electric Co-Op installs the necessary equipment to enable Buy Back,
we WILL install Solar Panels on our place.

Until then, it is Conservation & Passive Solar techniques for us.

6. Other possibilities...
It seems to be that - at the utility scale - energy storage based on molten salts may be efficient enough for widespread deployment. They wouldn't have to be directly connected to a solar-thermal system, and would store energy as heat during peak solar and wind input to a region's grid. Generating heat from electricity is highly efficient, esp. if the electricity is generated locally.
