Bush Urges Conservation (while GOP Congress cuts conservation programs)
Edited on Tue Sep-27-05 08:28 AM by Viking12
In another brilliant display of backwards-ass logic the GOP in Washington is urging conservation out of one side of their ass while cutting programs designed to improve conservation :wtf: :shrug:

Bush Urges Conservation as Retail Gas Prices Rise
http://www.nytimes.com/2005/09/26/business/26cnd-gas.html?ei=5094&en=53f023b3f0228c1e&hp=&ex=1127793600&adxnnl=1&partner=homepage&adxnnlx=1127775603-jQYWlCZQ2F8jM9CcPWbr+Q

Meanwhile...the House Republicans are ready, with their "Operation Offset," a list of cuts they say could squeeze $500 billion in 10 years out of the federal budget.

Unsurprisingly, the cuts impose pain almost exclusively on programs meant to help the environment and the less fortunate. Here are a few of the cuts:

Eliminate the EnergyStar program;
eliminate state and community grants for energy conservation;
eliminate National Parks Heritage Areas;
reduce Amtrak subsidies (how come they never call highway spending "subsidies"?);
eliminate the high-speed rail and light-rail programs;
reduce fish and wildlife habitat construction;
reduce Department of Energy Office of Environmental Management;
eliminate the Applied Research for Renewable Energy Sources program;
eliminate the FreedomCar program; and
eliminate the Hydrogen Fuel Initiative.
