Smith joins the Flat Earth Society
Scientists tell our senator and president that it's later than
they think
Oil changes are cheaper than rebuilding a car's engine. Avoiding
environmental damage is less costly than repairing or
compensating for it. Most of us learn early on that routine
maintenance of our cars and homes is more sensible than ignoring
the warning light on the dashboard or the drip from the ceiling.

A group of 17 prominent Northwest scientists noted Friday on The
Oregonian's editorial page that Sen. Gordon Smith wants to
ignore urgently flashing warning lights that tell us our world
is overheating. Instead, like a 16-year-old driving his first
car, Smith prefers to hope the temperature gauge is broken.
Smith voted against the Climate Stewardship Act, which would
have taken some small but meaningful steps toward joining the
U.S. with other industrialized countries in beginning to curb
greenhouse gas emissions and developing alternative energy
technologies.

President Bush's eagerness to give away our natural resources
and trash the environment is a product of intellectual laziness
and political venality. Gordon Smith is smarter than that and
knows better. A majority of Oregon voters did not send Gordon
Smith to the Senate with the expectation that he would join the
Flat Earth Society.
