America should stay clear of '50s mentality

MacArthur award winner and energy physicist Amory Lovins was in town last week speaking about the gold mine of energy efficiency and his book, "Winning the Oil Endgame."

...

It's the 1950s mentality that flogs the vast waste of nuclear energy, that throws money and incentives at oil and natural gas companies when their pockets are bulging with obscene profits, that wants to drill for oil and gas in the pristine, pure-water wild lands of the Valle Vidal and Otero Mesa and that creates a national energy policy without realistic transportation-efficiency standards.

...

The current transportation, oil and gas and power industries have become free-market troglodytes, dragging us all into an energy crisis caused by their abject refusal to build energy-efficient products and aggressively promote conservation.

Instead, they provoke increased demand with every tool in the marketer's trade.
