Tropical Storm Beta forms off of Nicauraga.

MIAMI, Florida (AP) -- Tropical Storm Beta formed Thursday in the southwestern Caribbean Sea, extending this year's record of named storms in the Atlantic hurricane season.

Beta is the season's 23rd tropical storm, the most since record keeping began in 1851. The disturbance formed Wednesday night, but forecasters said it was not expected to threaten the United States.

I think this is another one that seemed to have popped up out of nowhere, and was only weakly predicted. More evidence for the fact that the models are breaking down.

3. It used to end on November 30.
But we're in a new climate, so who's to say?

4. Current predictions look good for the U. S. Gulf Coast
not being hit by this one.

6. Latest models on Beta
Beta

Notice how the NHC's track is not updated yet? This storm bears watching. I have been saying it for 2 days now. This is where Wilma formed, very hot water here, Wilma was 882mb lowest on record, 5 feet of rain on the Yucatan. Got stronger when it went over Florida, would not die on the open Atlantic even with strong cross winds. People need to throw all past knowledge about storms and the hurricane seasons out the window, because there are new rules being established.

Here is what would be Gamma.

What would happen if these storms would combine?
Which name would used?

Another page here showing where all of the past Hurricanes have gone that originated where Beta is - doesn't mean much but still pretty interesting.

We may end up having T. Storms all year round if the ocean keeps getting hotter and hotter.

7. We'll have to see what it does...
"Although conditions are barely marginal for development, seems that marginal has taken on a new meaning this year -- so all
these systems bear watching."

15. Why not hiragana or katakana?
Something about "Tropical Storm Fu" or "Hurricane Ka" is vaguely appealing . . .

16. Someone posted here on DU once that Storms should be named
after animals. ie: Hurricane Aardvark

Of course Hurricane Kimono Dragon(not sure if Kimono is spelled right) might not sound so funny.

17. Can we string two hiragana together?
as in hurricane shi-tsu?

If so, I'm for it. Let's write a letter to the World Meterological Society.

18. According to the wunderground blogs...
...Delta is now a possibility as well, forming closer to the eastern part of the Atlantic, no less! Tropical storm formation in that area this late in the season is yet another rarity that we will have to reconsider as such. :eyes:
