Editorial against Cape Cod wind power NARNMSCBY
...or Not Anywhere Remotely Near My Summer Cabin's Back Yard, as it seems the people that oppose the wind farm are mostly wacko rich part-time residents.

The wind farm that is being opposed will provide locally produced power equivalent to three quarters of the demand of Cape Cod, a significant shift away from fossil fuels. More than that, it is a clear sign that, in Massachusetts, we know how to plan for a better future.

...

In this case, the issue of planning has been addressed through the National Environmental Policy Act's comprehensive environmental impact statement, now under public review. The statement shows that the environmental changes attributable to the construction of 130 large wind turbines on Horseshoe Shoal will be minor to the point of insignificant.

1. It's been that way since the project was proposed!
Even Ted Kennedy voiced his opposition to Cape Wind. All arguments that are brought against Cape Wind are usually by those who simply don't want to look at it.
I'm not exactly jumping for joy over Cape Wind but I could think of worse things they could build on Cape Cod. Quite bluntly I am more concerned about public access to the shoreline and overdevelopment than I am about Cape Wind.
Cape Wind is the first large-scale test for coastal wind power. If successful it will be model for other projects. I do beleive there is another similar project proposed for Long Island Sound, and much larger as well. I think it should be given a chance.

3. The Irony for Cape Cod Fishermen Is That...
The irony for Cape Cod fishermen is that if the windmills were built, they'd prove to be the same sort of boon for fish that artificial reefs have proven elsewhere.

Personally, I think that if the windmills could be sited just far enough away, they'd be out of sight for everyone who lacks a three-story house with a widow's walk.

4. I can't understand it
I think that well-designed windplants are pretty, kind of like modern versions of lighthouses.

I do sympathize, just a little, because not everyone has my particular and peculiar esthetic sense, but responding to a challenge from one of the people who post here, I did some research into it. It looks like a well-designed, solid, economically feasible project.
