The Miami Herald: Water ruling is expected to produce ripple effect
Water ruling is expected to produce ripple effect

Without the big pumps, a swath of western Broward County that is home to 136,000 people would flood within days -- just from the water ceaselessly trickling from under the Everglades.

Sitting atop a levee that engineers carved across the marsh a half-century ago, the pumps slurp water from the C-11 canal on the suburban side and spill it into a confluence of more canals flowing into the sawgrass west of U.S. 27 near Everglades Holiday Park.

But in the process of keeping the streets of Weston and other cities dry, the pumps also inject pollution into the Everglades, mostly traces of fertilizer and pesticide that keep lawns so green.

That problem has elevated a lawsuit by the Miccosukee Tribe over a pumping station known as the S-9 into a major and closely watched test of federal water quality law. The U.S. Supreme Court hears arguments Wednesday.

1. Let's see if I have this stright...
Somebody sold some swamp land. A bunch of rubes buy it. They drained it and build a town. However they have to keep draining this "land" or it will re-swamp.

Solution: Move the town to higher ground & quit mucking up what is left of the Everglades.

3. I used to live in So Fla...
I grew up in Coral Springs, which is next door to Weston.

Yes, Weston is a neighborhood of Millionares. They aren't going anywhere. What makes me sick is that the developers KNEW this before contruction started.

4. Just wait....
until the heat wave next summer hits Florida and they have a few days of blackouts.

I'm willing to bet that they don't have a back-up plan that will allow them to keep pumping for long periods without electricity.

5. The people the Bush administration supports are terrified
they may be forced to comply with the law, and their profits may take a temporary dip as they get up to speed, and actually do the right thing, for a change.

From the article:
(snip) David Guest, an attorney for Earthjustice, which represents the Sierra Club, National Wildlife Federation and other environmental groups, dismissed what he called ''Chicken Little'' tactics.

''The sky isn't falling,'' he said. ``They're just not willing to follow the law.'' (snip)
Will we EVER see the day when someone actually lowers him/herself and complies, even if it means giving up a temporary ill-gotten advantage?
