Australia Day Address: Climate, Salinity, Renewable Energy Top Issues
AUSTRALIA needs to focus on global warming, salinity and sustainable energy sources in 2006, Governor-General Michael Jeffery said today. In his official Australia Day address to the nation, Major General Jeffery warned Australians to take better care of their land.

"One of the most daunting environmental challenges is global warming," he said. "The cost of environmental degradation to a sustainable globe is enormous." He made particular mention of the threat from rising water temperatures to the Great Barrier Reef.

EDIT

He also urged a bigger investment in sustainable energy sources.

"Our mineral resources are not infinite," he said. "We need to encourage further research and development of alternative, safe, efficient and clean energy sources."
