Augustine Erupts After 10-day Break - ADN
Augustine Volcano continued its new pattern of nearly constant eruptions overnight, puffing ash with small explosions into the lower-elevations. There were two larger explosions early this morning, the largest at 3:25 a.m. and another at 6:25 a.m., blowing ash more than 25,000 into the atmosphere, the Alaska Volcano Observatory reported.

As over the weekend, the ash was being tracked by radar drifting south and to the east. The latest blasts triggered an ash fall advisory until noon today for Kodiak Island and the western Kenai Peninsula south of Clam Gulch. The ash is not expected to move toward Anchorage or Kenai-Soldotna area at this point.

"My guess is that Homer will get at most a dusting of ash but possibly none at all," said Peter Cervelli, a geophysicist at the volcano observatory. "The situation is evolving rapidly and things can change really quickly."

Scientists say Augustine entered a new phase of its eruption over the weekend: a prolonged gushing of ash into the lower atmosphere throughout the day Sunday, kick-started by four short explosions Friday night and Saturday morning.
