WASHINGTON--Sen. Lisa Murkowski, R-Alaska, said Monday that she believes man-made gases are contributing to global warming and urged government action to combat the trend, but she stopped short of endorsing legislation to cap U.S. production of such gases.
"I believe there is now almost universal acceptance that our planet is warming," Murkowski said, according to a copy of prepared remarks she delivered at Catholic University Law School in Washington, D.C. "While the extent of anthropogenic influence on our climate may remain in debate, I believe it is a reality that man is contributing to the current warming trend."
Natural variation, which may be significant, can't be controlled, she noted. "We can, however, control and measure greenhouse gas emissions from human activity," she said.
EDIT
Less aggressive caps may be worthwhile, though, she said. "I look forward to spending time later this year investigating this approach," she said. Murkowski endorsed more federal spending on research and technology.
EDIT
Hey! Lookee here! A bold call for more research and studies!!
