Chile authorizes Barrick gold mining project
SANTIAGO, Chile — The Chilean government on Wednesday authorized Toronto-based Barrick Gold Corp.'s (TSX: ABX) proposal for a $1.5-billion (U.S.), open-pit gold mine in the Andes mountains that is opposed by environmentalists.
But it prohibited the relocation of three mountain glaciers included in the plan, authorities said.
The proposed relocation of part of the glaciers by Barrick had triggered a strong opposition to the project by environmental groups in Chile and abroad.
Environmental groups argued the project would damage the ecosystem in the fertile Huasco Valley, especially because of the glacier relocation.
Barrick had insisted that it would protect the environment in the area and that what Chilean officials call "glaciers" are actually just "ice masses."
