2. Don't worry about the ovals. Just look at the color scale.

You can see how much of the water is covered over by ice that way, and obviously the white areas of the map have no ice at all. What's important is that this land mass is only a few hundred miles from the north pole but around much of it there is simply no ice cover at all, and when there is ice, it's just little chunks of it rather than solid cover.
