Thames Water Considering Towing Icebergs To London
Edited on Thu May-25-06 05:35 PM by hatrack
BRITAIN'S biggest water supplier, Thames Water, is thinking of towing icebergs from the Arctic to London to solve what could be the worst shortage in a century.

"We have to look at any possible alternative, including towing icebergs from the Arctic and seeding rain clouds," a Thames Water spokesman told the Times newspaper. An iceberg 1.6km long, 300m wide and 270m deep would contain would contain 90,000 megalitres of fresh water, enough to supply 445,000 families in Britain for a year.

While admitting that many people might find the idea "daft", the spokesman did not rule out using icebergs. Thames Water had not determined whether it would make more sense to bring icebergs in from Greenland or northern Scandinavia, he added.

The spokesman said other plans included transporting water across the North Sea by tanker from Scandinavia.

7. how so?
How is that? These icebergs are already floating in the ocean, slowly melting. Sounds like a decent idea to me, providing it makes economic sense.

3. Hmm.
They can counteract the freshwater melt with desalinization waste.

Just a thought.

5. It's like to the old days in California.
One would from time to time hear about towed icebergs and big water tankers.

I suggest a giant straw attached to the melting glaciers in Switerzland. There's no reason that water should go waste.

6. Thames Water ...
... are a bunch of incompetent, self-serving idiots.

According to the OfWat report of December 2004, Thames Water
were LOSING 900,000,000 litres PER DAY.

At this time, they were reporting an operating profit of ~£395M.

They are a collection of thieving immoral c*nts.

(OfWat = regulator for the water/sewerage industry in England & Wales)
