Is Ethos Fuel Re-formulation fuel additive really effective at reducing
emissions and extending mileage?

Someone asked me to go in on this with them, and I was a little put off because it sounded a little like a pyramid scheme. But perhaps it's a very good temporary answer to the emissions problem. Anyone have any experience or info on this product?

Here's some info I gathered:

4E Corporation

Non-Toxic, Non-hazardous
Extend Engine Life
Reduce Maintenance
Bridging the Lubrication Gap
Reduces emissions

Ethos FR is unique combination of high-quality, non-toxic, specially designed esters that uses only the elements of carbon, hydrogen and oxygen.

This combination of low molecular weight cleaning esters and high molecular weight lubricating esters, reformulates any fuel whether its gasoline, diesel, methanol, ethanol, hydrogen, LNG, compressed natural gas or bio-diesel.

EPA laboratories tests confirm that Ethos FR is 99.99976% clean upon ignition and ash less upon combustion. Ethos FR is free of carcinogens.

Gas Savings Made Possible With 4E Corporation's MLM and Ethos FR
4E Corporation ventures Network Marketing business model with the product Ethos Fuel Re-Formulator. Early results show very good public fanfare.

/24-7PressRelease/ - May 10, 2006 - After 10 years of proven commercial use, for the first time Ethos Fuel Re-Formulator is being made available to the general public through 4E Corporations MLM venture. Ethos FR availability came just at the right time for the everyday consumer of gas to be very excited about getting some relief at the pump.

Ethos FR reduces emissions by 30% or more. The product is non-toxic, non-hazardous and works with any fuel whether it is gasoline, diesel, methanol, ethanol, LNG, compressed natural gas or bio-diesel. The consumer simply adds one once to every 10 gallons of fuel.

The business results have been revealing of the public's displeasure with the prices at the pump. 4E was launched on April 30th 2006 in the US. They have 64,000 members who have signed up to date..cont'd

2. C, H, and O are pretty much anything organic and water based.

3. yeah, that's marketing speak-- it's a hydrocarbon ester...
...presumably a relatively light one. I'd be sceptical of claims-- I'd want to see data and be told how it was gathered.

4. Not much info as to how it works, or what's in it.
I'd be really suspicious of anything that claims to improve performance of ALL fuels -- that seems highly improbable. But it's the method of marketing that really sets off my alarms. Why not just distribute it like STP and other car care products?

It claims to be (among other things) an engine lubricant, which is certainly not too extravagant a claim. And it's known that oxygenated species (such as ethanol and TBME) promote smooth ignition, so I suppose low-MW esters could do the same. But does it really make *that* much difference? I'd want to see documentation, or some evidence that the company has a good reputation.

5. I don't really believe it.
I've seen a lot about fuel chemistry, and I don't believe this at all.

I'd stay away from it, especially if it requires enough money to "go in on" with someone else.

6. Probable Scam
I find two independent news stations review of this product. Both citing it does not perform as advertised.

These things keep popping up on the gasbuddy.com message boards. To date they have preatty much all been shown to be false claims which is also what the Fed. Consumer Protection bureau is saying about them.

8. Would you mind posting those news stories?
Did the stations run their own tests?

9. Links
In the first week of using Ethos, the mileage dropped from 20.9 to 16.7 miles per gallon -- more than a 20 percent decrease. Champion said the driving habits were the same as before he added Ethos.

Overall, the mileage with Ethos was about 18 miles per gallon under the same driving conditions. That's almost 3 fewer miles to the gallon than without Ethos.

We put it in our news truck and pumped it full of gas. We followed the instructions and put it in our oil. Then we went for a drive. We did this three times. First with just regular unleaded to get a base mileage and then twice with the Ethos. After our first fill-up we got our base miles per gallon. After the first tank with Ehtos we lost mileage by a little more than one percent, but the second tank recovered giving us an overall increase 1.5 percent. We did our best to recreate a realistic driving experience. We followed the Ethos instructions and we put roughly the same amount of gas in the tank at every fill-up, but again our test showed just a 1.5 percent increase.

"Gas-Saving" Products: Fact or Fuelishness?

Gas prices are up, and so is the volume of advertising for "gas-saving" products. When gasoline prices rise, consumers often look for ways to improve fuel efficiency. Although there are practical steps you can take to increase gas mileage, the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) warns you to be wary of any gas-saving claims for automotive devices or oil and gas additives. Even for the few gas-saving products that have been found to work, the savings have been small.

7. Thanks for the input. Yes, it is surprising how difficult it is to find

information about what it is and how it works, beyond their personal claims. And I agree...it's all about the marketing with little substantive information. And there are other red flags.

I found this law case under a google, that involves some investors and bank transfers:

And this discussion about whether or not it's a scam:

It seems this company is getting together with NASCAR........nuff said:
