Marin's super solar project (Marin Co. CA)

Officials are celebrating completion of the largest solar power project in Marin County at the Las Gallinas Valley Sanitary District's treatment plant in San Rafael.

Three acres of solar panels will generate 571 kilowatts of electricity the district's board expects will reduce pollution and pay for the $3.5 million cost within 10 to 12 years.

At full capacity, it will supply 92 percent of the electricity needed to power the district's treatment plant, which provides sewer service for 30,000 customers from the Civic Center to Marinwood. It also will eliminate 890,000 pounds of carbon dioxide emissions annually.

"When PG&E raises its prices, we'll save even more," Harper said.
